The first eco-friendly museum in Sri Lanka is to open tomorrow at the most famous Sigiriya rock fortress premises, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs announced.

This eco-friendly museum comprising an information center, six exhibition halls, rest rooms, an auditorium, a drama theater, and a relic storage has been established with the assistance from Japan.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has granted Rs. 480 million to this project, the Ministry added.

Sri Lanka government hopes to boost the tourism industry by introducing this kind of eco-friendly museums at selected tourist sites in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared open the new museum built in Sigiriya, the historic rock fortress of Sri Lanka, this evening.

Former Prime Minister of Japan and the President of the Sri Lanka – Japan Friendship Association, Yasuo Fukuda participated in the opening ceremony on an invitation from the government.

The museum built according to the international standards at a cost of 480 million rupees is the first eco-friendly museum in the country. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded the project to build the museum under the development of Culture - Oriented Tourism in Sigiriya.

President Rajapaksa addressing gathering said Sri Lanka’s glorious historical heritage is a vital source of strength when rebuilding the country and it is important to bestow a clear understanding to the future generation on national culture and discipline.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama thanking the Japan-Sri Lanka friendship association said the Sigiriya Museum has been declared the most attractive in the South Asian region by JICA.

The museum features two main artifacts of an archeological value, the furnace used to melt iron during the Anuradhapura era, and a valuable earring found in Sigiriya. Rare artifacts found in Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are also preserved in the museum.

In addition to displaying artifacts the museum will also carryout educational and research programs and distribute print and electronic media aids.

The museum includes a theatre with modern facilities, auditorium, and a spacious vehicle park.
